so ESPN has a 4pt series on college sports and change. topic #1 is whether or not college athletes should get paid. jay bilas believes in the olympic model of marketing their likeness. some of the former athlete announcers agree (in principle). the administraters and coaches dissent. reason? it will really place star athlethes above the others and are the players really gonna focus on playing/team and studies or be more worried about signing autographs for $$$? heres what i think needs to happen. college sports are huge moneymakers, the major sports that is. these kids shouldnt have to worry about their education, but they need to commit to getting one, not just playing. if you do not recieve a schlorship, then that student should be able to supplement their income anyway they see fit that doesnt compromise the integrity of the game. so if a female LAX player is given shoes and clothes, or money for textbooks, she shouldnt be penalized. (ok so using a smart person, ivy league sport is kinda out there, but we aint all rich). i agree change needs to occur, but its got to be in the best interest of the student and the game. i mean the BCS brings in a shitton of moolah. i know it goes to the school, but all students need to see that cash, and if they are playing a sport, and bring more attention to that school, in whatever sport, they need to be taken care of. since i think working wouldnt be an option, because i really want them to concentrate on their studies.
